Learn to Curl

The best way to learn to curl is to attend our series of introductory classes. You don't have to be a member to take the class. After taking the class you then have the opportunity to join the club.

Groups can also take advantage of our rental program, which includes instruction, ice time, and the use of all needed curling equipment. For more information on rentals please see our rentals page.

The Detroit Curling Club Community Education classes consist of three weekly sessions ending in a fun mini "bonspiel" with classmates and current club members. We have classes scheduled for the fall and winter. The fall course is described below and the winter course will follow a similar format on Friday, January 11th, Saturday, January 12th, and Saturday, January 19th.

Winter Course 2013 - January 11th, 12th, and 19th

Friday, January 11th - 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
Topics: History of curling, history of the club, delivery basics (sliding and delivering a stone), sweeping basics.
Saturday, January 12th - 10:00 am to 12:00 pm
Topics: More delivery and sweeping skills and coaching, how to play and score a game, how to join the DCC.
Saturday, January 19th - 9:00 am to 2:00 pm
Mini Bon (2 game scrimmage)

Cost: $65 ($55 class fee plus $10 for rental of equipment)

The class consists of three sessions that will run on two Fridays and a Saturday. We run classes so that you get a good mix of classroom talk and ice time. There's so much to the game both on and off the ice and we'd like you to get a feel for that. The Friday classes will be mostly instruction. The Saturday class is a 2 game scrimmage where teams will be made up of two DCC members and two class participants. This will give you a chance to meet our members and get a feel for the spirit of the game.

What to wear: We ask that people wear warm, comfortable clothes (athletic pants and sweatshirts, hats, gloves, etc) and bring clean tennis shoes. Preferably no fleece or jeans.

What to expect: I don't know if you've ever curled before, but it's a blast! Fair warning though - it can be addicting. The sport itself is great, the people are great, and it's great exercise. The physical act of throwing a stone is unlike anything you've probably ever done before, so sometimes muscles that haven't been used in a while are awakened and not very happy. We will do some stretching before we go out on the ice.
